our economy, the other hot issue
Posted on 14. Sep, 2009 by Maria Clark.
A year ago, many of us sat in front of our television sets and watched hundreds of former Lehman Brothers employees walk out their office building for a final time with all their possesions in hand. Obama will travel to Federal Hall today, on the anniversary of Lehman Brothers’ demise to address his plan for […]

The Afghanistan War: A Gold Medal in the Special Olympics?
Posted on 13. Sep, 2009 by Joel Schectman.
Karzai’s electoral fraud has added to the telling signs that Afghanistan could become Obama’s Iraq. Bush’s presidency can now be summarized with the name of the latter country. If Obama doesn’t want to end-up in the same place he must now aggressively seize the Afghan War’s narrative, not through a show of blank check commitment, […]

Bad Republicans
Posted on 13. Sep, 2009 by Kaili Boyd.
While I understand that Republicans need to find a way to show their disapproval for the issues they disagree with, sometimes I wish that they would respect the priviledge that they possess, just a little bit more. For the first time in my life, I’m actually interested enough in politics to pay attention to the […]

Why I Can't Take the 9/12 Movement and the GOP Seriously
Posted on 13. Sep, 2009 by Michael Preston.
I must confess I don’t posses the intellect needed to assess the actions and motivations behind Glenn Beck’s “9/12 Project”, a conflation of disparate conservative activist groups which culminated with a march on Washington, D.C. yesterday to protest…what exactly? Taxes? Spending? Health care reform? The creeping socialist/Nazi/Islamofascism policies of the Hussein X Obama Stalin administration? […]

Mr. Wilson Yells at the President
Posted on 12. Sep, 2009 by Carla Murphy.
He wouldn’t have shouted “You lie!” to a white president. Maybe. Maybe not. I suppose arguments could be made for both sides but on questionable racial slip-ups, I tend to swing by on the “Who gives a [beep]?” branch of the Negro family tree. When it comes to race, this country runs the same tired […]

On the Anniversary of 9/11, Let Us Pause
Posted on 11. Sep, 2009 by Collin Orcutt.
“… So on this solemn day, at this sacred hour, once more we pause.” ~President Obama, from his 9/11 anniversary remarks To pause is a rarity. To pause is to stop, to stop is to make no progress, and to make no progress is to fall behind. This goes against the unspoken American doctrine of […]

The Quality of Mercy
Posted on 09. Sep, 2009 by Robert Voris.
In 2004, the State of Texas murdered Cameron Todd Willingham. It planned the murder in advance, picking a date, time and method. Though he pleaded for mercy, the state showed none. The murder occurred in public, with plenty of witnesses on hand as Willingham protested his fate one last time and exhaled his final breath. Under Texas state law, the state of Texas should be executed.

Is America's Love Affair With Barack Obama Over Already?
Posted on 08. Sep, 2009 by Nicholas Martinez.
According to David Brooks of the New York Times, the numbers say yes – – he states that President Obama’s job approval rating is down 20 points to about 50 percent. Also, 59 percent of Americans now think the country is headed in the wrong direction. And you thought I was cynical. When Barack Obama […]

The President is coming to a school near you
Posted on 06. Sep, 2009 by Maria Clark.
Healthcare isn’t the only hot topic coming up this week. From Dallas to Miami, dozens of parents have threatened to keep their kids from attending school on Tuesday when Obama’s back-to-school speech will be aired. Some parents and right-wing politicians have gone as far as stating that the speech is a totalitarian ploy to brainwash […]

President Jesus and The Rule of Law
Posted on 06. Sep, 2009 by Robert Voris.
Candidate Barack Obama understood that the executive is one branch of government and, as a legislator and as a law professor, had an excellent understanding of the roles played by the other two. His constituents seem far less attuned to the sensitivities of government. Their gripe is pretty simple: Obama was the candidate of change; now that he’s President, why haven’t things changed?
